Queens College Cricket Ground; huge outfield, batting wicket, neatly clipped grass – runs galore? Not today!! Isis bowled and fielded as well as they have done all season to restrict the visitors to a relatively low score in this Twenty20 thrash.
Having lost the toss the opposition were put into bat, as Isis once again mixed up the bowling. Injuries and absentees have paved the way for members new and old to prove that batsmen can bowl and bowlers can bat this season. Graham Godby is one such example - his figures of 1-20 off four overs proving that taking the pace off the ball can frustrate batsmen and prevent boundaries. At the other end Dave Lawrence was in buoyant form, and having taken six wickets on Sunday bowled with nagging accuracy, conceding just 14 runs off his four overs, whilst snaring opening bat Honour (c&b) for just two runs. Wickets continued to fall as Dan Pick took 2-10 on his debut and Joe Walter bowled two short, economical spells, which included a stumping for Jacobs off a neatly planned wide delivery! Isis are a hot and cold fielding side and in this game they were on fire as Lawrence, Pick and Nick Wyatt all accounted for Blackwells batsmen with run-outs. Wyatt also bowled the only visiting batsman to reach double figures, with Eckley’s well crafted 45 helping the publishers to disappointing total of 81 all-out.
The visitors refused to lie down though, taking to the field with much buoyancy and bowling and fielding tightly as Isis began their reply. Indeed after eight overs the home-side had been restricted to 15-2, with Ritchie Ramcreepaul and Paul Jacobs falling for one and zero respectively. Although looking out of sorts, big hitter Lester Whitby was still at the crease. He was joined at the crease by Trevor Williams, who, having seen the opening bowlers off picked up the scoring – smashing a quick 24 runs before being bowled. The direction of the game had swung back into Isis’ favour. Kevin Game helped push the score along with a tidy nine not out and Lester Whitby remained unbeaten for a patient 43.
Isis had made hard work of their reply, but had secured a well needed victory in a game they would have expected to win.
