With two teams pulling out at the eleventh hour, the 2004 competition was reduced to six teams and a round-robin was played with the top two finishers ending the tournament in a final.  That was contested by Wayfarers and Isis A, and was marked by the highest innings scores of the day for the loss of no wickets.  Eventually it was Isis, undefeated on the day, who won in dramatic fashion by surpassing the difficult Wayfarers total of 70-0 with one ball to spare.

A big thank you was sent to all the teams who participated and made this inaugural event such a success.  A hasty preliminary round was established when one team pulled out late, and this decided who played in which group, with Astons receiving a free place in Group 1.  Astons and Charlton-on-Otmoor contested a great final in the rain.   Game of the match must have been Astons versus the Chris Williams VI, which went right to the wire with the all important wicket of big-hitting Usman Latif being taken with the penultimate ball of the match, and with only 3 runs required.  Nick Wyatt organised the teams, Paul Jacobs got the trophies and the rest of the Isis boys scored and did various other administrative tasks on the day, including raffle donations.

Everyone enjoyed this experimental day so much that it was hoped the Isis 6-a-side would become a firm favourite in the annual Oxfordshire friendly cricket calendar.

The third Isis Six-A-Side tournament got off to an early start on a warm and sun-drenched mid-July day, and for the first time the tournament was played in its conceived format.  On paper University Offices were favourites for the competition, but six-a-side cricket is never that predictable and the day saw some closely fought contests.  Unfortunately Enstone and Astons both suffered the loss of players at the eleventh-hour, but to their credit graced the day by turning up short-handed.  Their participation was assured by the begging, borrowing and stealing of players and what a fantastic effort this was, as both teams made it through to the semi-finals as group runners up.  Unfortunately, they met strong opposition though and it was Charlton-on-Otmoor and University Offices who won through and contested the final.  And what a final it turned out to be, when in a last-ball scramble Offices matched a good Charlton score of 78.  After much debate and deliberation, the two exhausted sides then agreed to share the winners spot, typifying the camaraderie of the day.  Individual awards were received by Asim Rahman (most runs) and J. Organ (best bowling economy).

In the Isis 20th anniversary six-a-side, the teams reverted to the 2003 format when Wayfarers were forced to withdraw from the competition.  A preliminary round was drawn which decided the playing order and groupings, Enstone winning a free bye into the four-team Group 2.  While they didn’t win the individual trophies, Jack Hart’s 51 against Enstone and Keith Ponsford’s hat-trick in the first game of the day were the Isis highlights.  Earlier, Enstone were lucky to face an on-form UOH line-up and were set a competition record target of 105 in their opening match.  There was much scratching of heads to decide the semi-final placing, where teams on equal points after the group matches were involved in bowl-offs, which  Charlton-on-Otmoor 1’s securing second spot in Group 1 and UOH doing the same in Group 2, both going on to contest the final.  Amidst a month of rain, we were lucky for respite throughout the day, and while the final ended in poor light, we enjoyed pleasant weather throughout.  Congratulations to Charlton who won the final convincingly and secured the trophy in their own right for the first time in the history of the competition.

GROUP B

Competition Rules

- A draw is made at the start of the day to decide the order of play.

- Games are played concurrently (e.g. Side A bats in Game 1, Side C bats in Game 2, Side B bats in Game 1 and Side D bats in Game 2 etc.)

- 2 points are awarded for a win and 0 points for a loss. A bowl-off decides a drawn match or tie.

- There are five overs per innings (all fielders bowl one over, excepting the wicket-keeper)

- All bowlers are limited by a maximum allowed run-up

- All wides and no-balls incur an automatic 3-run penalty, with no extra ball bowled (except in the final over of the game, when extra balls are bowled on top of the penalty runs)

- Any ball bowled down the leg-side and not played (however close to the stumps) is adjudged wide.  Any ball bowled on the off-side that passes more than half-way between the off-stump and the outside of the popping crease is also adjudged wide.

- Any ball bouncing more than once before reaching the batsman is adjudged a no-ball.  Anything above waist height on the full or anything over shoulder height (whether pitched or on the full) is also adjudged a no-ball.

- Teams not playing in a concurrent match are asked to supply an umpire to presides over one of the games in progress.

2006 SEASON:

Sadly, two sides withdrew just before the tournament, and so as in 2004 we were reduced to six teams.  However, this year we tried another new format, with the six sides elected into two groups, with each team playing the other two in their group twice, once starting the batting and once starting the bowling (I always reckon that the side batting second has an advantage in six-a-side).  The sun once again beat down from a  cloudless sky right from the off and after an excellent competition it was U.O.H. and Astons who contested the final.  We’ve had some great finishes in recent years, but this one was hard to beat for tension and drama.  U.O.H. had bowled well at the young Astons side, but despite that, Astons were still able to amass a creditable 65 runs through the excellent running of Ralph Smith and the hard-hitting of Dan .  Nevertheless, with Neil Ferreira in scintillating form with the bat all day, and the dependable Andy Milne as his partner, you always fancied Hospitals would nick this one unless Astons bowled and fielded out of their skins.  Well, while Hospitals never lost a wicket in this final innings, they very nearly lost the match.  With typical competitive verve, the Astons fielders had set about their task with aplomb and as the fifth and final over was set to commence, Hospitals were still short of the target.  After five balls of that over, they still needed six runs to tie the scores and win by virtue of losing less wickets.  Imagine the anguish then as that final ball resulted in two deliveries, both adjudged wide at a  penalty of three runs each, with a further run taken on the last.  Perhaps this was a fitting end given that Hospitals have not won the competition before, but do spare a thought for poor old Stuart who was given the unenviable task of bowling that last and fateful over.  As ever we are grateful to everybody who helped on the day, particularly to Keith Ponsford and Ben Pearson for some mammoth umpiring spells, to Martin and Shirley for hospitality and to our friends from the participating teams for another great competition.

2007 SEASON:

Another difficult lead up to this year’s competition saw three teams drop out and two come in and we were pleased to welcome newbies Keen Cricketers and works team ELSAT.  A hastily prepared redraw was made on the eve of the competition and all was set fair for another Isis Sixes.  The weather forecast leading up to the day was poor, but in fact the morning saw bright sunshine, blue skies, fluffy white clouds and England batting the second innings with a healthy lead at Lords.  The preliminary round to decide the groupings set the pace and the competition ran like clock-work throughout the day.  There were certainly some close-run matches in the group stages, for example Charlton snatching a last ball win over Isis and then losing by only 3 runs to Appleton in their final group game.  The semi-finals saw Wayfarers play Charlton, and Appleton play Enstone.  While Wayfarers secured their place in the final with the biggest total of the day, the other semi-final could not have been closer.  Two Enstone wickets fell in dramatic fashion in the final over with only one run needed for the win, and so a bowl-off was held with Appleton snatching their place 2-1 as the light started to fade.  Wayfarers showed their youthful class with both bat and ball and were worthy winners in the final, though with obvious teamanship and camaraderie Appleton made a great effort to catch up in the rain.  Thanks to Trevor Williams, Keith Ponsford and all the players who helped with umpiring and scoring duties through the day and to Martin and Shirley for their ever-present hospitality.
