About This Website
Welcome to the brand-new Isis Cricket Club website at www.isiscc.org.uk, a domain that first came into existence on 28th April 2003. This is the fruit of a 3-month-long project to migrate the previous version to a sustainable environment that I can leave to the club to run and support in my absence, whenever and for whatever reason that becomes a reality.
If this is your first visit then it’s probably fine, but if you did review the beta-test version while it was still under construction, please press Ctrl+F5 in your browser if you see any strange display or styling issues. This performs a "hard refresh" in web browsers and downloads content again from the server, rather than using stored local files (cache).
The rewrite of the site was necessary because the legacy tools used for previous versions are out of support and their capabilities deprecated. And they were privately licensed products on a personal computer, out of reach of the wider club. This new site is built on open-source tools, and the underlying database already sits in the club’s Google account (cricketisiscc.gmail.com). The database (in Google Sheets) generates output files, which are converted to page templates for the Eleventy product to convert to HTML. Eleventy (abbreviated 11ty) is an open-source static site generator, a software system for creating websites, written in JavaScript. Another open-source tool, FileZilla, is used to upload the resulting HTML to our hosted domain within Krystal Hosting.
Most users will be more interested in the functionality and usability of the site than the publishing pipeline, and so you should be. But if anybody wants to know more about the architecture, which I have illustrated in the .PDF attachment, then I’d be happy to tell you more. For now, I hope you enjoy the new site, its usability, accessibility and speed on PC, tablet or phone. If you have feedback or are missing anything from the old site please send me email.
Play Your Part
Finally, at the heart of the ecosystem is the database, and that is all about statistics. Without accurate scoring, data entry of match facts and import to the database the website is not worth the candle. In this new ecosystem YOU can play your part and can undertake that data entry. All you need is a private Google account, and the will to spend about 30 mins of your time (or less) after a match to enter the scoresheet and submit it to a database administrator to upload. There is user-guide attached and if you are interested on being such a volunteer just email the committee to let one of us know.
